So you’ve heard that MBTA late-night service starts tonight, but they’re only going to keep it around if it makes money. It’s basically your civic duty to go to the bar, stay until closing time, then sort of mill around on the sidewalk sharing cigarettes with strangers, searching their sad eyes for some passing hint at real human connection and, finding none, jump on the T around 2 a.m. That’s after you hit up some of these fun events happening this weekend, obviously. Spring into, um, spring with Madonna parties, sci-fi cons and more weekend events

Happy first day of spring! That’s according to my official Labrador Retriever-themed wall calendar, not some rodent from Pennsylvania, of all places. Get out there and celebrate the slow but delightful realization that the sun, in addition to providing light, also functions as a source of heat. (more…)

The person behind Boston’s fastest growing twitter account: @OnlyInBOS

By: - Friday, Mar 14, 2014 - 12:01am

It isn’t your average Sunday morning coffee date when you get the chance to spend it chatting with the Bostonian behind the Twitter handle we all look to for the latest on Boston happenings. I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with the @OnlyinBOS at Pavement Coffeehouse on Boylston to find out a little more about how the account works, the success behind the tweets, and how this person created this well known Boston persona all within the constraints of 140 characters.

@onlyinbos

Let’s kick things off by asking you about the local king of 140 characters, @BostonTweet. Have you met Tom? Are you trying to do something similar to him? If not, what makes your account different?

I have not formally met @BostonTweet, but we have been at the same events. (more…)

Happy Daylight Savings Time! Here’s some stuff to do with all this extra sunlight, instead of just waiting another hour until it’s dark and you can finally start drinking. (more…)

Boston, the city that never sleeps… in

By: - Monday, Mar 10, 2014 - 12:23pm

Boston redditor DJG513 reminds us of Boston’s lackluster late-night culture:

All that could be soon be changing as newly appointed Marty Walsh recently announced plans to appoint a “Late-Night Task Force.” Amongst various initiatives, Walsh said he plans to have the task force “look at 3:30 a.m. closings” for bars and restaurants. Read the full story via WBUR.

Take a break from your “True Detective” binge to crown Boston’s king of wings, sample some local maple syrup, and see a local institution’s milestone performance. Or don’t, it doesn’t really matter because time is a flat circle and everything we’ve ever done or will do, we’re gonna do over and over and over again. (more…)

“Cold sunset on the Esplanade last night.” Posted to IG by @brianmcw.

As you already know, The Boston Calendar launched an Instagram (IG as we in the biz like to call it) account less than a month ago.  We gained 332 followers and 75 posts in such a short amount of time!  Before we delve into our own Instagrammers (IGers), let’s check out who we think you should be following.  This is my biased list of the Top 10 Boston-Based Instagrams: (more…)

As far as things to get drunk and stare at go, fire has to rank right up there with football and a television showing football. Saturday’s Fire & Ice Winter Festival in Union Square features professional fire-spinners A Different Spin, plus ice sculptures and specialty cocktails at area restaurants. Keep reading for more info and the rest of this weekend’s events. (more…)

How to hunt for an apartment in Boston

By: - Wednesday, Feb 26, 2014 - 11:11pm

Searching for an apartment in Boston is a unique process…and a big pain in the ass. 79 percent of all rentals in Boston turn over their leases between September 1st and 14th, setting the stage for aggressive rental agents and frantic tenant hopefuls. Signing on something that’s not a complete piece of shit requires some legwork and a little bit of patience. Having lived in four different apartments over eight years in Boston, I thought I’d share my experience in finding a decent place for a good price.

1) Figure out where you want to live: Budget and location are the two most important things to consider when looking for an apartment. The image below is a rental heat map put together by Jeff Kaufman — he used data from the website PadMapper. We took it a step further and added geographically accurate T stops. There’s a lot of useful info packed into this little map. For example, you can identify cheaper neighborhoods by looking at cooler colors. A quick glace at the map shows somewhat reasonable prices in Brighton Center/Oak Sq, Assembly Sq, Lower Allston, Ward 2 Somerville, and certain parts of JP and Dorchester.

Weekend forecast: No blizzards, lots of events

By: - Friday, Feb 21, 2014 - 2:26pm

Right now as I type this sentence, my Weather Channel app predicts a high of 50 degrees Saturday. That’s shorts weather, people. But more importantly: It means you can make plans for the weekend without the nagging fear that you’ll look out the window, it’s snowing like crazy, and just like that everything is canceled.

For this weekend at least, Boston’s total snowfall for the winter will remain about three quarters of a Pedroia.
