Boston redditor DJG513 reminds us of Boston’s lackluster late-night culture:
All that could be soon be changing as newly appointed Marty Walsh recently announced plans to appoint a “Late-Night Task Force.” Amongst various initiatives, Walsh said he plans to have the task force “look at 3:30 a.m. closings” for bars and restaurants. Read the full story via WBUR.

Take a break from your “True Detective” binge to crown Boston’s king of wings, sample some local maple syrup, and see a local institution’s milestone performance. Or don’t, it doesn’t really matter because time is a flat circle and everything we’ve ever done or will do, we’re gonna do over and over and over again. (more…)

“Cold sunset on the Esplanade last night.” Posted to IG by @brianmcw.
As you already know, The Boston Calendar launched an Instagram (IG as we in the biz like to call it) account less than a month ago. We gained 332 followers and 75 posts in such a short amount of time! Before we delve into our own Instagrammers (IGers), let’s check out who we think you should be following. This is my biased list of the Top 10 Boston-Based Instagrams: (more…)

This past summer I was made aware of TUGG (Technology Underwriting Greater Good) at a potluck meeting for social good in Boston. At the meeting I was introduced to the director of TUGG, David Brown, by potluck organizer Justin Kang. Justin told me about all the money TUGG has raised for nonprofits around the Boston area, and went on to rave about their Annual Charity Wine & Tequila Party. Well, on Thursday, March 13th that party is set to take place. Aside from it likely being amazing, the event is on track to raise $300K for charity! I caught back up with David via email and asked him about TUGG and the upcoming party…

Mayor Menino has tweeted multiple times about a recurring “coffee hour” event for BU students every Thursday afternoon. The Daily Free Press (independent newspaper at BU) reports that those office hours take place at his new office (75 Bay State Road) every Thursday from 3:30 to 5p, and “any students interested in speaking with him can drop into his office and explore their city-related concerns.” There is no official event listing or anything like that, so we went ahead and put it on The Boston Calendar. Keep in mind that this event is most likely open to BU students only.

In an interview with Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz spoke about gay athletes:
Ortiz said his mom Angela is responsible for teaching him acceptance, and spoke about one of his childhood friends, who, he said, “we all knew, when he was 13, that he was gay. And he was always talking to my mother, telling her everything. They were close. And it was my mother who taught me to love people for who they are. That’s what she told me.”
