Five hundred and some odd years ago, Columbus discovered America, kind of in the same way models get “discovered” by creepy agents at the mall. He gave America its big break! Here’s how to celebrate your three-day weekend if you’re lucky enough to work for the government or other employers that value a healthy work-life balance. (more…)

Get ready for another week of fun events, including a ton on Sunday for those of you who are boycotting the NFL due to the domestic violence controversy, the debilitating effects of concussions, or just because seriously what is the deal with the Patriots. Stop playing like the Bills and start playing like the Patriots. You are the only good thing about winter.

It’s shaping up to be a perfect late summer or early fall weekend, depending on how you want to look at things, and because I am a pessimist I’ll call it “basically winter because I can see my own breath at night.” So maybe pack a light jacket and enjoy this weekend’s events while the sun still functions as a source of warmth in addition to providing light. You may or may not agree with the Medford Masshole Kim Costa’s message to college students that went viral earlier this week. But just from the perspective of a guy who looks for cool stuff to do in the city, there’s even more cool stuff to do since the kids came back. Dodging a few backpacks on the T is a small price to pay for this week’s events.

Hey everyone, Jim from The Boston Calendar here. If you can’t find a way to get out of town for the long weekend to avoid the gigantic mess that is moving day in Boston, make the best of it with some pretty sweet theater, arts, and music events. Or just stroll around and make up aSeptember 1st drinking game: Moving truck stuck under a bridge on Storrow? Take a shot. Recent grad fighting with his mom because he wants to assert his independence but also has no earthly idea how to hang up curtains? Finish your drink. You get the idea. (more…)

People move to Boston for college or grad school, to start a career, or to build a following for their band before they move to Brooklyn (stupid Brooklyn). When you’re only here for a few years, it’s easy to live like a tourist in your own city: Walking the Freedom Trail, waiting in line at Mike’s Pastry, quacking away on duck boats. You’d FOMO so hard if you only knew what you were M’ing O on.
Welcome to your Boston Bucket List, an occasional series featuring the essential but sometimes under-the-radar spots you need to hit before you leave Boston. First up: Skyline views. (more…)

Coming up this week in Boston: A hip reading series marks its first birthday, a Harvard Square institution celebrates its 60th, and you have multiple opportunities to play ping pong outdoors in the name of art. What’s that? You want to get drunk at the zoo? Sure, we can make that happen, too. (more…)

While you’re worrying about what to do this weekend, remember that a wise man once said “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” That wise man? Actually, it was a guy I went to high school with who came up with it for his yearbook quote. Good stuff. Anyways, here’s hoping some cool life stuff happens all over you while you’re reading about this weekend’s events. (more…)

Just because it’s the middle of summer doesn’t mean your brain lacks the ability to process art. Maybe you just need a pint of cider to wash it down. Or the art is just rock band posters. Or, even better, the whole museum is roughly the size of a toaster oven and you can see everything during a “Sharknado 2” commercial break. (more…)

What did the humidity say to the heat? “It’s not you, it’s me!” (Also works with “What did the DiGiorno say to delivery?” or “What did HBO say to TV?”) Try not to laugh so hard you forget to put on deodorant, because it’s pretty sticky out there and a lot of this weekend’s events are happening outside, and this is America where we possess a relatively low tolerance for other people’s body odor — one of our greatest cultural achievements along with football and jazz music.
