Coming up this week in Boston: A hip reading series marks its first birthday, a Harvard Square institution celebrates its 60th, and you have multiple opportunities to play ping pong outdoors in the name of art. What’s that? You want to get drunk at the zoo? Sure, we can make that happen, too. (more…)

While you’re worrying about what to do this weekend, remember that a wise man once said “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” That wise man? Actually, it was a guy I went to high school with who came up with it for his yearbook quote. Good stuff. Anyways, here’s hoping some cool life stuff happens all over you while you’re reading about this weekend’s events. (more…)

This Weekend’s Boston Events: Parties, Posters, and Punk

Just because it’s the middle of summer doesn’t mean your brain lacks the ability to process art. Maybe you just need a pint of cider to wash it down. Or the art is just rock band posters. Or, even better, the whole museum is roughly the size of a toaster oven and you can see everything during a “Sharknado 2” commercial break. (more…)

What did the humidity say to the heat? “It’s not you, it’s me!” (Also works with “What did the DiGiorno say to delivery?” or “What did HBO say to TV?”) Try not to laugh so hard you forget to put on deodorant, because it’s pretty sticky out there and a lot of this weekend’s events are happening outside, and this is America where we possess a relatively low tolerance for other people’s body odor — one of our greatest cultural achievements along with football and jazz music. The nice thing about summer is you can take normal indoor activities and move them outside and they get way better. Like theatre or movie screenings, ice cream or beer festivals, even just sitting around doing nothing is better if you’re on a park bench, because at least the pigeons will be your friends, or at least they won’t judge you for your career and lifestyle choices, and if they do, screw them, the never-ending bread party stops right here, pal. Stuck in the city while all your friends jet off to the Cape or some other beach-side paradise for the Independence Day weekend? No worries, they’re the ones missing out on tons of cool stuff happening around town. And when you’re FOMO-ing all over their pics that look straight out of a Corona ad, remember that no one Instagrams the four hours of traffic they sat in to get to the beach. (more…)

Boston JerkFest: Summer and spice and everything nice

The Boston Calendar team stopped by yesterday’s Boston JerkFest Caribbean festival on assignment for Boston.com:

Boston’s ties to Jamaica go back lot further back than the Fenway fans who serenaded right fielder Shane Victorino with Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” before every at-bat last fall.

Some historians believe the neighborhood of Jamaica Plain was named after the rum distilled here from Jamaican cane sugar, and the island’s signature jerk seasoning traces its roots to the beach-side pork and chicken stands that sprung up after trade with the Boston Fruit Company sparked an economic boom on Jamaica’s north coast.

So it’s no surprise that the second annual Boston JerkFest brought a diverse crowd to the Franklin Institute of Technology campus to celebrate all things Caribbean, with two sessions featuring food and cocktail demonstrations, spice and craft vendors, live music, and more.

We’re getting into that time of year when you can’t leave the house without immediately sweating through your shirt, so you might as well get sweaty on the dance floor with a bunch of other sweaty, sexy people. And if you wake up with a hangover the next morning? Just sweat it out, baby. Sweat it out. (more…)

Happy solstice, pagans everywhere! Saturday is the longest day of the year and the first day of summer — or, for pessimists, it’s when the days start getting shorter and summer is basically almost over. Hurry up and go do some fun stuff while you have the chance, because winter is coming. (more…)

Hope all you dads out there had a great Father’s Day! And I hope all you kids out there got back from dinner in time to watch the “Game of Thrones” finale. Or maybe you went to dinner late because dad had to finish watching golf, but give him a break, golf is the closest thing old people have to “Game of Thrones.” Anyways, here’s some stuff to do this week to fill that Iron Throne-shaped hole in your life.
