A lesson in fundraising

By: - Thursday, Mar 27, 2014 - 4:33pm

After learning about the tragic deaths of Lt. Edward Walsh and firefighter Mike Kennedy I wondered if there was anything The Boston Calendar could do to help. As I normally do, I checked the homepage of my favorite online Boston community, r/Boston. There was a post there titled “How do we *actually* honor our fallen firefighters?” The most popular idea in that thread was to set up a scholarship fund for Lt. Walsh’s three children (even the top comment mentioned it). My gut instinct was “yes, that’s is a great idea.” So I immediately created an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign aimed at raising money for the scholarship fund.

The person behind Boston’s fastest growing twitter account: @OnlyInBOS

By: - Friday, Mar 14, 2014 - 12:01am

It isn’t your average Sunday morning coffee date when you get the chance to spend it chatting with the Bostonian behind the Twitter handle we all look to for the latest on Boston happenings. I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with the @OnlyinBOS at Pavement Coffeehouse on Boylston to find out a little more about how the account works, the success behind the tweets, and how this person created this well known Boston persona all within the constraints of 140 characters.

Let’s kick things off by asking you about the local king of 140 characters, @BostonTweet. Have you met Tom? Are you trying to do something similar to him? If not, what makes your account different?

I have not formally met @BostonTweet, but we have been at the same events. (more…)

Boston, the city that never sleeps… in

By: - Monday, Mar 10, 2014 - 12:23pm

Boston redditor DJG513 reminds us of Boston’s lackluster late-night culture:

All that could be soon be changing as newly appointed Marty Walsh recently announced plans to appoint a “Late-Night Task Force.” Amongst various initiatives, Walsh said he plans to have the task force “look at 3:30 a.m. closings” for bars and restaurants. Read the full story via WBUR.

During a blowout loss to the Golden State Warriors Wednesday, Celtics fans started cheering for something completely non-basketball related: Tupac. Celtics Locker Room Reporter @CLNS_JaredWeiss tweeted this picture of the Tupac lookalike during the game:

Former Mayor Menino holds “coffee hour” with BU students every Thursday

By: - Sunday, Mar 2, 2014 - 11:55pm

Mayor Menino has tweeted multiple times about a recurring “coffee hour” event for BU students every Thursday afternoon. The Daily Free Press (independent newspaper at BU) reports that those office hours take place at his new office (75 Bay State Road) every Thursday from 3:30 to 5p, and “any students interested in speaking with him can drop into his office and explore their city-related concerns.” There is no official event listing or anything like that, so we went ahead and put it on The Boston Calendar. Keep in mind that this event is most likely open to BU students only.

Big Papi would welcome gay teammates: “It’s the (expletive) 21st century man. Get over it.”

By: - Saturday, Mar 1, 2014 - 12:49am

In an interview with Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz spoke about gay athletes:

Ortiz said his mom Angela is responsible for teaching him acceptance, and spoke about one of his childhood friends, who, he said, “we all knew, when he was 13, that he was gay. And he was always talking to my mother, telling her everything. They were close. And it was my mother who taught me to love people for who they are. That’s what she told me.”

Why tomorrow’s Tasty Burger show isn’t happening at Tasty Burger

By: - Tuesday, Feb 25, 2014 - 4:17pm

We were pretty excited about Wednesday’s bill at Tasty Burger Harvard Square: Jangly indie rockers Bent Shapes, Philadelphia’s Bleeding Rainbow, and best-band-name-in-town candidate Fat Creeps. $5 cover, all ages, in the basement of a Pulp Fiction-inspired burger joint. What’s not to love?

Just like a burger served slathered in mayonnaise when the menu didn’t say anything about fucking mayonnaise and you certainly didn’t ask for it, something went horribly, horribly wrong. (more…)
