If you didn’t make it to Boston Calling last weekend, you probably got pretty sick of reading and hearing about it all week. Well now’s your chance to go do something pretty fun, and then totally exaggerate how fun it was to make your friends jealous. A few of your options: Seeing classic movies back in theaters, drinking at the zoo, and crushing a couple kegs of pickles. (more…)

Can’t make it to Boston Calling this weekend? Don’t just sit around getting angrier and angrier whenever your friends Instagram pics of their hippie-chic outfits (just kidding, we’re not Coachella so that’s not really a thing, at least I hope it isn’t). Check out a couple smaller music fests — one so awesome it put awesome in its own name — plus an after party featuring one of Boston Calling’s rising local acts. (more…)

There are some sweet outdoor events coming up this weekend, but it looks like the weather won’t cooperate. When I was a kid, on rainy days when we really wanted the sun to come out (so we could play sports games or burn stuff with a magnifying glass) we would look to the skies and sing “You Are My Sunshine.” Sometimes it worked but mostly my mom just really hates that song now. Anyways, it’s worth a shot. (more…)

The Together festival kicked off last night, so we could have easily filled up this week’s event picks with performances, screenings, panels and parties. But the festival isn’t the only way to get some art and music in your life this week: Check out some improv comedy, live jazz, or just punk rockers wearing pasties. Sure, that counts as art. (more…)

This weekend’s a good time to see some art, music or theater, live and in-person, even if it means giving up on whatever critically acclaimed TV series you’re trying to catch up on. Unless that series is “Orphan Black” in which case just remember to change position on the couch once in a while so you don’t get bed sores. (more…)

Fast movies, bad movies, Keytar Bear benefits and more events this week

While you spent the past 48 hours staving off scurvy by squirting lime juice into every food or beverage that went in your mouth, teams of local filmmakers were writing, shooting and editing entire movies. See how those turned out, plus a movie that’s so bad it’s good and one that hasn’t hit theaters yet. (more…)

Today I learned on the Internet that Socrates and/or Eleanor Roosevelt said only “average minds” discuss events. Looking at this weekend’s slate of awesome events happening in Boston, you know what? Guilty as charged, Socrates/Eleanor Roosevelt. Guilty as charged. (more…)

Right now in Boston, it’s simultaneously Art Week, Lit Week, and Jazz Week. A film festival wraps up; comedy and photography festivals kick off. Now’s your chance to do something artsy so you won’t feel guilty about the hours and hours you spend watching sports or laughing at memes or whatever culturally bankrupt activities take up most of your time.  (more…)

Just one more week of April showers left, so most of this weekend’s events are happening indoors. But then it’s all May flowers and sunshine from here on out! Or at least until the humidity kicks in and we get the occasional “summer shower” (that’s what I call it when you bump into a really sweaty guy on the T). (more…)

The world descends on Boston with a very special Marathon Monday coming up, and the city’s slate of events rises to the occasion. If you’re hanging out with any runners this weekend, remember that it’s just good etiquette to pay for their beers. They need the carbs, after all. (more…)
